Atomic number is the number of protons in the nuclei of the atoms of a given element. The elements on the Periodic Table are arranged according to increasing atomic number. For example, carbon's atomic number is 6, so it has 6 protons in the nuclei of all of its atoms.

Mass number is the number of protons and neutrons in the nuclei of the atoms of a particular isotope of an element. For example, carbon-12 is an isotope of carbon that has 6 protons and 6 neutrons in the nuclei of its atoms. However, carbon-14 is an isotope of carbon that has 6 protons and 8 neutrons in the nuclei of its atoms.

Atomic Number: Number of protons in the atom. Defines which element it is.

Mass Number: The average mass of the atoms of a given element. The mass is the sum of the protons and neutrons. This is an average because the different isotopes exist in different quantities.

Isotopes: Atoms of the same element (equal number of protons) but with different number of neutrons.

Ex. Hydrogen has 1 proton. Over 99% of the hydrogen if composed of a single proton but there are two other isotopes for hydrogen: deuterium (1 proton and 1 neutron) and tritium (1 proton and 2 neutrons). If you check the periodic table, the Atomic Mass of hydrogen will be 1.00794 because a small percentage of the hydrogen has atomic mass larger than 1.

What does atomic mass do?

The atomic mass is equal to the number of protons plus neutrons. So if you know the atomic number then you can find out the number of neutrons Atomic # is the amount of Protons or Electrons Atomic Mass- Number of protons plus neutrons Atomic Mass-Atomic Number = Amount of neutrons
