8.38 deaths per 1000 is the death rate in the United States. The US Census Bureau estimates there are 307,006,500 million people living in the US. So you can take that number and divide that by 1000. Then take that figure and multiply that by 8.38. I don't have a calculator handy. On one site I saw an estimated figure of 800,000 deaths a year but I don't know if that was accurate.
That number is directly proportional to the population of Connecticut.

In the United States, there are more than 32,000 yearly deaths caused by firearms each year. This number is slowly rising, while the incidence rate (i.e. deaths per 100,000 people) is about the same. This means that there are about 85 deaths each day in the USA due to a gun. Note that about 19,000 of those deaths are suicides, 11,000 from homicide, and 800 from accidents.
