Climates in Latin America vary from alpine in the High Andes, to desert in northern Mexico and along the Pacific coast of South America, and tropical rain forest in the Amazon, with lowland settled areas mostly humid and tropical. The largest single area is the Amazon basin, with its dense heat and humidity, although this is relieved in the rainy season by low fronts that come up from the south and can plunge the temperature by forty degrees in a matter of minutes.
