How many episodes does a typical TV show season have?

There really isn't an average.

Networks probably want 5 seasons since then they can sell it into syndication and make more money from the show but some shows last 1, some 7, some 27, some 47.

Someone could add up all the currently running shows and come up with an average but that's a LOT of data to accumulate when you consider how many shows are currently running in the U.S., not to mention world wide.

For most series in the UK about 6-10, sometimes more (for example, Waterloo Road is from the UK and has about 18-20 episodes per season.)

It can vary. Most broadcast network shows have 22 episodes, though there is a trend to do some with only 10-13. "Sleepy Hollow" is an example.

Most Cable Television series do 10-13 episodes.

A cartoon show tends to have more episodes since its anime (100-200 is the landmark) but other than an Anime cartoon the landmark is usually around 90-100 episodes because most actors and actresses get tired or outgrow there role.

There isn't a single answer for this question. It depends on the season & frankly if you're referring to simply the network programming or including cable & syndicated shows as well. Obviously including cable & syndicated the number would be much greater.

Just looking at the networks, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX & CW,

• For the 2012-2013 TV season there are 132 shows.
• For the 2011-2012 TV season there were 115 shows.
• For the 2010-2011 TV season there were 136 shows.
