In the clinical setting, obesity is usually measured by means of theQuetelet index or Body Mass Index (BMI).Densitometryis considered the gold standard but is time consuming and complicated.

The BMI is calculated by your weight in Kg divided by your squared height in meters (Kg/m2). The value is then compared to a range.

Classification of weight status.

BMI (Kg/m2)

Underweight

<18.5

Healthy/Normal

18.5-24.9

Overweight

25.0-29.9

Obese Class I

30.0-34.9

Obese Class II

35.0-39.9

Obese Class III

>/= 40

The determination of being "under", "normal", "over" weight or obese depends on your height as well as your weight. Your "BMI" or Body Mass Index is a strong indication of if you are "obese". Other than a statistical average, there is no particular weight for an obese person. Weight (whether underweight, overweight, or obese) is related to height and body composition. Obesity is determined by BMI or body fat percentage. For more information, see the page links, further down this page, listed under Related Questions.
