The combustion of Butane (C4H10) with oxygen (02) produces carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). The balanced and simplified this reaction is 2 butane + 13 water = 8 carbon dioxide and 10 water.

The given equation is the equation of combustion of a hydrocarbon which is butane.

Its combustion produces carbon dioxide not carbon monoxide.

The accurate reaction is :-

2C4H10 + 13O2 -----------> 8CO2 + 10H2O

The above is for the Complete combustion(where there is plenty of oxygen to combust in) of butane which produces Carbon Dioxide, however the Incomplete Combustion (where there is a limited supply of oxygen) of Butane does produce Carbon Monoxide for which the equation is:

2C4H10 + 9O2 -----------> 8CO + 10H2O

8Carbon 8Carbon

20Hydrogen 20Hydrogen

18Oxygen 8Oxygen + 10Oxygen
