The ancient Greeks didn't see their religion as we would think of it today. It was a combination of their culture and their tradition, with the added element of supernaturalism. They saw it as a major part of being a Greek, and interpreted many events as being caused by, or in the light of being favoured or damned by, this or that god or goddess.
