Even though you get it at the begging of the game, DO NOT GET RID OF IT!!!!!!!!. It is really good for corvus, the final boss. The rusty sword, a scale shield, a trailblazing bandana, the celestial suit, ultra-marine mittens, cotton trousers, celestial shoes and a gold rosary.
I would advise that you change it during the middle, but corvus can only hit 1- 50 on you. It sounds absurd I know buit trust me it works.
