Seems nothing is affordable anymore..... Top shelf Innova, California Naturals, $$$ Medium priced Nutro brands, get these at Petco or Feed stores or Blue Seal Brand Some dog foods alot of well known brands including Iams, Nutro and alot of others, had some recalls on there canned and one of there dry foods, but anyway I don't trust any dog food business's anymore. Look at ingredients, you don't want peanut hulls etc in your food, nor do you want sugar. If you are lucky enough to have a small dog, you can feed your dog what you eat, basic healthy foods, meat, vegetables. No sugar items. And give a dog vitamin chew tablet. From experience my next dog will eat what I eat, I think commerical dog foods are the causes of canine Diabetes and canine cushings disease, matter of fact go to K9 Diabetes on the web they have a comparison dog food list there and lots of helpful info on all kinds of things.

I don't know that there is a "best" puppy food but try this website. Anything rated 4 or higher will be good. I have read that very high protein foods are not so good for puppies.

It really depends on the quality of food: The best foods are ones that have good quality and whole meats in (labelled as: Chicken, Turkey, Beef, Lamb, etc.) as the first or first two on the ingredients list. Stay away from ingredients such as Grain, Corn, Wheat Gluten, Cereals and Various Sugars, as these ingredients have no nutritional value for dogs. Such ingredients can cause food Allergies, weight gain and other health problems in the long term.

These fillers are used instead of meat because, compared to meat, it is less costly, and helps to hold the kibble together. However, some high quality dry food brands such as Orijen, Innova and Applaws are free of grains and cereals.

The notion that dry food cleans a dog's teeth has not been proven. Kibble pieces are too hard and brittle and break apart too easily to offer any tooth cleaning benefits. Dental issues usually start at or under the gum line, so kibble is usually ineffective. Dry food should not be fed for the sole notion that it keeps an animal's teeth clean. Instead, the type of food fed should benefit the whole animal, not just one part of it.

Wet food is easier to find with no grains or other fillers, and has a high moisture content which keeps the dog hydrated.

Some of the best brands are:

Eagle Pack Pet Food Company, Orijen, EVO, Blue Buffalo, Canidae, Wainwrights, NatureDiet.

Another Answer

You should not buy food that is on TV or in a commercial because the company is most likely to spend more money on the quality of the commercial rather than the food.

It depends what dog you have, and what your dog likes.

The best foods are ones that have good quality and whole meats in (labelled as: Chicken, Turkey, Beef, Lamb, etc.) as the first or first two on the ingredients list. It is ideal to stay away from brands that include "filler" ingredients such as Cereal, Corn, Wheat or Soy as these offer no nutrition to a dog. Rice can be an acceptable ingredient (if your dog can digest it), but is generally considered that the quantity of meat should be more than the quantity of rice in the food.

I have a Maltese and he will eat about any dog food except the dry kind, so try a little bit of each until you can find the right one.

There is no such thing as the best dog food.

Each breed of dog have their own dietary requirements. These requirements depend on:

  • The breed
  • The age
  • The size
  • Medical conditions
  • Allergies

Puppies have weaker teeth than adult dogs, therefore they should avoid food that is too hard for them. There are both wet and dry food specially designed for puppy consumption.

The age of the dog affects two things: their stomach size and their teeth. The more mature the dog is, the larger their appetite. Puppies, as already mentioned, will have weak teeth. Older or elderly dogs may also have weakened teeth due to the wear and tear throughout their lifetime.

The size of the dog matters too. A Great Dane for example will eat a lot more than a Jack Russell, therefore the owner needs large quantities of food that is filling, as opposed to large quantities which are not filling or small quantities. Some medical conditions can prevent a dog from eating certain foods. For example, dogs who suffer from a condition that causes digestive stress.

Some dogs have allergies to some of the ingredients in commercially produced dog food. have you noticed that a tin of dog food will say, for example, "chicken flavoured". Think about that for a second. "Chicken flavoured", not "100% chicken". There is a difference. Flavourings can cause allergic reactions if your dog is allergic to the ingredients.

Like humans, dogs also have their own preferences. You for example might like a certain brand of cheese, but dislike another similar brand of cheese. Dogs are exactly the same with their food.

As already pointed out, there is no such thing as "best" dog food. Some of the most well-known brands are:
  • Pedigree
  • Iams
  • Wainwright's
  • Royal Canin
  • Wagg
  • Baker's

Some brands are also available specifically from vets, such as Eukanuba, which is great for dieting dogs and is used in dog rescue kennels.

However if you want my personal opinion, I share the same opinion as many other dog lovers. That dogs should have a natural diet, or at least partially a natural diet. In the wild, dogs are predators, they will hunt and eat whatever fleshy animal they can find. Birds, sheep, cows, fish and so on. Feeding your dog natural meats instead of commercial dog food is, in my opinion, the best food a dog can get. The bones from the meats (never give your dog bones from birds, they are too small) will help to keep the dog's teeth clean by scraping off any plaque and dirt, just like humans with a toothbrush. Of course it is also a costly diet if there is a family to feed as well. Half-commerical and half-natural would be a good way to feed your dog too.

If you need advice on food for your dog, visit the local vet. They are there to provide advice, not just to patch animals up when things go wrong.

Your puppy should be fed a good balanced puppy food. This can be dry food better known as Kibble or wet puppy food. Dry puppy food has the advantage of beginning less messy and you can add water to dry food and make some or all of it into a porridge especially for you puppies.

Will it benefit your 3 year old chihuahua to eat Purina CV with puppy chow mixed in for her ONLY diet and to start the puppies on the same thing when they go to solid food?

I think that puppy food wont benefit her because it is aimed at puppies. The nutrients will benefit puppies. You should give your puppies the puppy food and the dog the adult dog food. However, with most whole kibble dog foods, you dont need to give them extra tinned dog food
