They help supplement the resources of people who are generally down on their luck. The food packages will feed a family for several days, but aren't intended as a permanent fix to the situation. Food banks may recommend other agencies for assistance in housing, medical care or job development, for instance.
A food bank is an organization, usually non-profit, that collects and distributes food to the community. The world's first food bank, started by John van Hengel in 1967, is in Phoenix, Arizona and is called Saint Mary's Food Bank Alliance. Despite the name, the organization has no religious affiliation, only its unmatched dedication to the community.
Essentially, the practice of food banking is now universal, thanks in no small part to van Hengel and his efforts. After beginning St. Mary's, he founded other organizations and non-profits that now operate worldwide.
These locations operate by collecting donations, welcoming financial support, and utilizing volunteers to collect, sort, and distribute food to the community. Simply, food banks operate much like banks, only they are not 'too big to fail' and in these times, they desperately need the support of their community, so they may better serve the people. Food banks rely entirely on donations and support, and all money that would become profit for the food banks (if its a non-profit) goes back to the community, instead of to payroll. As a result, people who are elligible may go to the food banks and purchase or receive for free a box of food.
Check the links below for more information on St. Mary's, the Global FoodBanking Network, and Feeding America. Via these websites, you may find out how and where to donate and volunteer. These three programs collaborate and cooperate through the work of Mr. John van Hengel to provide food for the hungry locally, and now around the globe.
