The best home defense is a shotgun. 20ga would be best because everyone can use it. It is safer than a pistol as it won't go far through walls and kill your neighbor. Also, in a frantic situation, you don't have to aim it perfectly as long as there is shot and not a slug loaded. OO shot is not necessarily the best. Try #4 shot. More pellets and still will stop and intruder. Plus, just looking down the barrel of a shotgun is a deterrent.
I agree with the above, but it should be noted that there's a drastic difference between #4 buckshot and #4 birdshot. #4 Buckshot is .24 caliber, #4 birdshot is .13 caliber. In FBI tests, #4 birdshot was proved inadequate as a manstopper.
Go ahead and practice with birdshot (it's cheaper) but when you load up for home defense, make sure it says "buck" on the box.
(Many would disagree with the buck (slug) statement due to the fact that buck will pass through multiple walls of the house, thus making it more likely to hurt or kill someone like one of your kids or a neighbor depending on your wall type. Bird (pellet) shot is much safer from a bystander perspective)
