Whether or not you've stripped the table down, it must be cleaned, sanded, primed (i like "the Gripper" from home depot...best commercial primer I've used so far),painted, sanded, painted, sanded, top-coated, sanded,top coated. I naturally go for oil on wood. BUT there are those who just don't...Sherwin Williams puts out a cabinet paint available in colors that drys very hard. Ben Moore does too but they just updated their line...check with your local dealer.

∙ 13y agoAfter sanding it really well to prevent splinters, you can stain the table and seal it with a matte polyurethane seal to protect it from the elements. You can also prime it with a good wood primer and then paint it with latex enamel, which is highly durable, especially if you use a couple of coats and then use a poly seal. Use a quality primer to assure the wood is sealed well before painting, and use a quality paint for durability. You don't want to invest time and money and then have the paint flaking off in your baked beans next summer.

∙ 14y agoStains are popular, but don't offer the same range of color and protection. You'd want to use a good primer and use an acrylic based paint on top of it. Most places that sell paint usually mark cans as "outdoor" if they're sufficient.
