It takes the mud out of the water by draining the water out of holes that the mud can't go threw.

EDIT: Since the 'bot' flagged the above answer as 'boring'!... Here's an epxanded answer. Muddy water is simply water with tiny particles of soil, rock etc. Filters have microscopic holes in them which are large enough to allow water through - but too small for the particles of dirt.
