The Leonid meteor shower occurs on November 17 each year, as the Earth passes through the debris stream in the orbit of comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. The best time to view meteors is generally between midnight and dawn, as that's when the Earth is "facing forward" in its orbit.

The Perseids are so called because the point they appear to come from, in theconstellation Perseus.

The shower is visible from mid July each year, with the greatest activity between August 8 and 14, peaking about August 12. During the peak, the rate of meteors reaches 60 or more per hour.

They can be seen all across the sky, but because of the path of Swift-Tuttle's orbit, Perseids are primarily visible in the northern hemisphere

Every year the Perseid meteor shower starts around mid-July and goes on until late August. It is only around mid-August, the 11th, 12th and 13th, that it is at its height and we can see the most. The further you are from those few days, either side, the less you will see. Earth is travelling through the remains of a trail of a comet and as it encounters the dirt and debris they burn up in our atmosphere. The edges of the trail have little debris, but as Earth goes further in, there is more and once it passes the middle it starts to thin out again, which is why the meteor shower starts with very few, then increases until mid-August and then starts to decline again.

The meteors appear to come from where Leo is, but as they then fly across the sky, you can see them anywhere in the sky. It is not necessary to know where Leo is in order to see the meteors. Just scan the sky continuously. During the course of the night Leo moves across the sky itself.

There are thousands of visible astroblemes (impact craters) that are visible on Earth. Perhaps the most notable is Meteor Crater near Winslow, Arizona, which is a well-preserved crater nearly a half-mile in diameter.

Meteor showers don't "turn on" at precise times like movie projectors. The path of ancient cometary debris has spread out quite a bit over the past XXX thousands of years. As the Earth approaches the path, we gradually move into the meteor shower, and it builds up over the course of a few, or several, days. There's normally one or two days of relatively intense activity, and then it tapers off over the course of a few more days.

So the Leonid meteor shower has been building up for a few days now, and should peak during the pre-dawn hours tonight (if it didn't peak LAST night....)

The Leonids occur in mid-November. The peak is usually around the 17th or 18th, but you will see them for a week or more before and after that, just not as many.

Leonid meteor showers occur often and the best place to observe them will differ from year to year. Typically, the Midwest part of the United States gets the best show.
