Primer, type depends on the type of wood.
Varnish preserves wood better than paint.
The wood type gift basket with white spray paint color on it is best for the winter months.
I use TiteBond 2 for balsa wood.
Use an oil based paint for durability to wear, water based for durability to sun and weather.
Home Depot offers a large range of paints and paint colors to suit your specific needs. I'd find out what type of wood your cabinets are made out of and ask the employee at your local Home Depot that best paints for that type of wood.
"Children's paint" isn't very descriptive. You'd need to specify an actual type of paint or, better yet, ask a worker at the place where you bought the paint if it works on wood.
First of all you have to go to the paint isle, and look for exterior paint. Then you will look for the outdoor paint that has wood treatment in it. The last thing to do is to pick out your color.
In my experience of painting skateboards some of the best type of paint to use is Glossy Spray Paint (make sure that is made for wood; it would say on the outside of the can). Note: For best result after painting the skateboard use wood polish in order to give it that brand new board feel. Also when using spray paint, hold the can approximately 5-6 inches away from the board to prevent the paint from dripping.
A special type of wood called driftwood and the paint
Use a block brush if it is a coarsely textured wood; otherwise, a roller will work best.
