There are three methods you can try. 1. Pull your lower eyelid down gently with your fingertip and roll your eye around, sometimes this dislodges it. 2. Close your eyes and place your finger on your upper eyelid and gently massage the eyeball. Open your eyes and hopefully the lens should reappear. 3. Squirt saline solution in your eye as the lens may have dehydrated in your sleep. Then try one of the two methods i have described above. I have worn contacts for about 16 years now and the best advice I can give you is:- TAKE THEM OUT BEFORE YOU FALL ASLEEP. DON'T RUB YOUR EYES TOO VIGOUROUSLY WITH THEM IN IF THEY HURT WHEN YOU PUT THEM BACK IN, WEAR YOUR GLASSES AND GET NEW LENSES. YOU ONLY GET ONE PAIR OF EYES. LOOK AFTER THEM.

Because of the great risk to the cornea you really should have someone take you right in to the eye doctor or urgent care facility. If you are unable or unwilling, try this...

Put in eye drops that are approved for use with contact lenses before you try to remove the lens. If you do not have drops (often referred to as re-wetting drops) you can use a multi-purpose solution. Give it a few minutes and put more drops/solution in. You can than CAREFULLY try to remove the lens. If it seems to stick or if there is pain, stop and go to your eye doctor or urgent care facility. If you are able to remove the lens, do not put it back in. Give your eyes a break and wear your glasses.

Best bet is never to sleep in them!!! Even a short nap can cause damage to the eyes. It is possible to cause PERMANENT eye damage or vision less by sleeping in your lenses.

First, wash your hands so you don't get any bacteria in your eyes from finger-to-eye contact.

Then take both of your index fingers and place them on the corners of the lens. If you're more comfortable using your thumb and index finger, by all means do so.

Push both fingers inward and it will lift off your eye.

Make sure you rinse the lens with Lens Solution and keep it in a Lens box/carrier.

Why do you wear an eye patch during Bell's Palsy?

Patients with Bell's Palsy sometimes wear an eye patch or cotton gauze taped over the eyelid that is paralyzed in order to keep that eyelid closed tightly. Keeping it closed tightly over long periods of time such as at night while sleeping is important because it keeps the cornea lubricated. Patients with BP cannot close the eyelid tightly even while asleep, so moisture escapes. Gauze taped over the eyelid keeps it pressed down.
