Jeff Smith was born in Tacoma ,Washington on January 22, 1939. He graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 1962, and Drew University in 1965, where he began his career as a minister in the United Methodist Church. In 1966, he became a chaplain at the University of Puget Sound, that same year, He was married to his wife Patricia "Patty" Smith and had two sons, Channing and Jason. In 1972, he opened a place in Tacoma, Washington called the Chaplain's Pantry, where he also offered cooking classes to the public, he sold it in 1983. He first appeared on television in 1973, and the show was called Cooking Fish Creatively. the first six episodes of Cooking Fish Creatively were broadcast in black and white, and then, KTPS-TV got federal grant for color cameras, because he wanted to design a new cooking show. After a move to WTTW Chicago in 1983, he got another cooking show called The Frugal Gourmet, and gained national recognition, wearing his signature striped apron. And in 1990, he took the show to A La Carte Communications, which also created Julia Child's later series. He appeared in TV commercials for Columbia Crest Wines. In 1995, he hosted his last cooking show called The Frugal Gourmet Keeps the Feast for The Odyssey Network, and then, he retired from television.
