The capital city of Mongolia is in fact Ulaanbaatar (pronounced Ulanbator) and is a city in north central Mongolia, capital of the Republic of Mongolia on the Tuul (Tula) River. The city is situated in a valley at an elevation of about 1,310 metres (4,300 feet) and is surrounded by ridges. It is the political, cultural, industrial, and transport centre of the country, connected by trunk roads to all the major towns in Mongolia and by rail to the Trans-Siberian and Chinese railway systems. Meat plants, a brewery, and a power station are in operation here, and important lignite mines are nearby.
