Brasilia is the capital of Brazil. The capital was moved from Rio de Janeiro in 1960, partly to stimulate development in the interior of Brazil.

Brasília became the capital city of Brazil on April 21, 1960. It's the third city in Brazil's history to become the nation's capital. Previous capitals were the colonial capital at Salvador (1549 to 1793), and then at the largest city of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro (1793 to 1960).

In 1956, Brazilian president Juscelino Kubitschek de Olveira ordered the building of Brasilia to fulfill an article in Brazil's constiution of 1891, which recommended moving the capital to a more central location within the country. It took 41 months to construct the government buildings at Brasilia.
