BrasÃlia became the capital city of Brazil on April 21, 1960. It's the third city in Brazil's history to become the nation's capital. Previous capitals were the colonial capital at Salvador (1549 to 1793), and then at the largest city of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro (1793 to 1960).
