Brisbane is the capital of Queensland. It is located in the southeast of the state, where the Brisbane River meets Moreton Bay.

The colony of the Moreton Bay District was founded in 1824, but abandoned less than a year later when the main settlement was moved 30km away, to the Brisbane River. On 4 May 1842, Moreton Bay was declared a free settlement. On 6 June 1859, the former Moreton Bay District was granted separation from New South Wales, and given the name of Queensland, with Brisbane as its capital city. Brisbane is named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, the Governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825.

Brisbane is the capital city of Australia for several reasons.

The Brisbane River was found by ticket-of-leave convict timber-getter Pamphlett, Finnegan and parsons in 1823. They, in turn, showed explorer John Oxley the location of the Brisbane River when he was exploring in the area (but had missed the mouth of the Brisbane River as it was hidden by Fisherman Islands). The Brisbane River empties into Moreton bay. Oxley pronounced the Moreton Bay area as ideal for a new convict settlement as it was separate from Sydney, but not too distant for trade. At this stage, Queensland was part of NSW.

The original convict settlement at Redcliffe failed less than a year after it was founded in 1824, due to lack of fresh water. The main settlement was then moved 30km away, to the Brisbane River.

As the southeast colony grew, the main port for the area was centred around Emu Point (now Cleveland in Redland City), south of Brisbane. For awhile, it was a strong contender for being Queensland's future capital city. This came to a dramatic end in 1842 when Governor Gipps tried to come ashore at Emu Point and ended up flat on his face in the mud and mangroves. The bay proved to be too shallow to be a major port in the future. After this, Brisbane became much more viable as the main port. When Queensland became a state in its own right in 1859, Brisbane became the capital city.

  • Townsville is the largest urban centre in North Queensland, leading it to be regarded as an unofficial capital
  • North Queensland or the Northern Region is the northern part of the state of Queensland in Australia.

It is important to remember that there is no capital of North Queensland because North Queensland is not a state in itself. The capital of Queensland - any part of it - is Brisbane.

However, regarding the question as it is asked, it would be misleading to suggest that Townsville is regarded as the unofficial capital, as the rivalry between Townsville and Cairns has been going on for years. For a better perspective of the question, see the article at the related link below.
