Yongsin, the village teacher, has far too many students to fit in the village school. She asks the elders and the government authorities for money to expand the school, but she is denied. Furthermore, she is told that she can only have eighty students at a time in the school, rather than the hundred and fifty or so who come every day to learn. She begins turning away tardy pupils, who fight and beg and cry to stay in class and learn. She compares them to the mulberry tree outside the window, just trying to bear fruit, and she is saddened by this harsh reality of life.
