A cheetah is a 'top predator' since no organism directly predates it.

Its niche is open plains, because it is a high speed(albeit short distance) chase predator. By comparison, the Sabre toothed cat was an ambush predator and a slow runner,whose niche was in woodland. It was unable to adapt when its habitat became open plains.
