What is the chemical formula for sucrose?

As a sugar, sucrose is a bit strange as the empirical formula (simplest form) shows that the formula should be in the form CnH2nOn so for sucrose to follow the pattern it should be C12H24O12 but it isn't =/

However, the empirical formula of (CH2O)n applies predominately to only the simplest of sugars - monosaccharides, and the formation of a disaccharide such as sucrose, forces the loss of a water molecule, H2O - the missing atoms.
