The best way I can explain it here is that there is a triple bond between carbon and nitrogen, and each has one lone pair of electrons, such that it satisfies the octet rule. Since there are only 3 bonds to carbon, and it has a lone pair, the carbon will bear the majority of the negative charge, while the nitrogen will be neutral
