You engine contains coolant, oil, Transmission Fluid, P/S fluid, brake fluid, gasoline, & windshield washer fluid. Smell of the fluid, and if it has no smell it is not gasoline. If it is not slick to the touch it is not oil, transmission fluid, or P/S fluid. So that leaves brake fluid, or windshield washer fluid. Brake fluid does have a slight smell, and may be slightly slick, if you pay close attention. Look at the area it is coming from and this is a clue to what is leaking. Try laying a piece of white paper under the vehicle and see what it looks like on paper. Color is a clue.

Coolant leaking from engine?

Yes, coolant can leak from the engine. If it's hot outside and you're running the Air Conditioner (AC) and you back up and see a liquid on the ground, it's probably condensation from the AC unit. Or, it could be collant leaking from the engine. How old is the car? Do you consider radiator hoses to be part of the engine? Radiator hoses should be replaced every 3-5 years, especially if there are bulges, or if they're leaking.

What is a radiator for?

The radiator helps cool liquids that exits the engine. A tube at the top of the radiator flows the liquid into the radiator. Fans blow air into the radiator and cools this liquid. This liquid is then exited through the bottom of radiator and released back into the engine to be used. Radiator also holds coolant to to speed cooling process of liquid

Probably not. White smoke indicates engine coolant getting into the engine cylinders and burning off. This could be a from a leaking head gasket or a crack in the block.

Why do you see coolant leaking on top of your engine?

Some engines have coolant passages molded into the intake which is mounted high on the engine. Some engines have the thermstat housing positioned high on the engine. These are two potential origins of the leak. Dry the liquid off the engine and run the engine while looking for the source of the leak.
