It depends on what foot disease you are talking about. I know of two I will tell you the symptoms of: Thrush: A fungal infection in the horse's hoof, usually affecting the frog and the grooves around it. Sometimes it can cause horses to turn up lame, but this is unlikely. The fungus eats at the frog and grooves. You can tell it's there because when you pick out the grooves (never pick the frog) you will see that they are black. Also, they will smell really bad! The grooves will have gotten deeper, too. I suggest using Thrushbuster. In the future, prevent thrush by picking out your horse's hooves well as often as possible. Laminitis/Founder: A infection in the lamine of the horse, which connects the hoof bone to the leg bone. The lamine will disfunction and the hoof bone will rotate (in some cases) causing extreme pain. Symptoms are that the horse will not want to move. HE may also look depressed. The afflicted feet will be hot to the touch. Squeeze his ankle; if there is a raging pulse, that is bad. He might stand with all legs sticking forward, trying to take the weight of the front legs. Have him stand with his front feet in ice water. If he will eat and drink, give him hay and water. NO GRAIN, TREATS or GRASS for a foundering horse! And most important: CALL THE VET! Don't make him move, either. Symptoms for a foot disease in general include lameness, hot feet, unwillingness to pick up feet, etc.

Problems are mud fever in the hoofs, if the ground they spell in is muddy or wet for a long period. Another problem is stones or other objects going into the frog in the middle of the hoof wich will make them sore for numerous weeks.

And if the horse is not regularly attended to by the farrier their feet will over grow and it can be a great expense to fix it.

There are a few that can hurt a horses foot. Lamatitis is one that causes the separation of the hoof. They can also abyss which is a sore that infects and prevents them from walking on that foot.

Other issues that affect the area include Thrush, Red Foot and white line disease.

Not being cleaned regularly doesn't help. Soft grass in the spring is very bad for a horse that has laminitis as the sugars from the grass get into the pours of the problem. Being inside rather then using their feet outside also creates issues. Abyss' can form if the horse is on too hard of ground or the feet are cut too short.

Horses need regular maintenance on their feet or they develop many serious issues.

This is a very important subject. There are several different hoof conditions a horse can get from neglected hoof care. The most common would probably be thrush, a fungal infection that forms on the bottom of the horses' hooves and frog. This is also a problem for a horse that has to stand in wet stalls or pastures and can't get to dry ground.

Just like regular grooming, you need to clean your horse's hooves daily. Remember the old saying "no feet, no horse". Know your horse's feet as well as you do your own feet. Look for wedged-in stones that can cause stone bruises or even abcesses. Make sure there are no punctures or cuts on the frog and sole. Look for any quaurter or heel cracks that are forming. These may need the attention of your farrier or vet. Hoof cracks can go all the way up to the coronary band if not stopped in time.

Make hoof care and cleaning part of your daily grooming. If you don't pick up your horses' feet, who knows what may be going on. If your horse has very dry hooves, get a topical hoof conditioner and apply it once or twice a week if needed. And last, your horse's hooves can detect dietary problems. A good diet, and if needed, a hoof supplement may be needed. These are added to your horse's daily rations and help his hooves from the inside out.

Typically a horse with healthy feet will bear weight equally on all four hooves and move out smoothly and calmly. A horse with hoof problems might be reluctant to move, stumble more than normal, hold a foot off the ground in an awkward position ( like the front leg might be held out with the toe pointing towards the ground, or the hind leg might be held higher off the ground than normal.) The horse may limp or even refuse to work. You can have the horse examined by either a equine farrier or equine veterinarian. They will feel the hoof for heat, use hoof testers to check for soreness, and possibly do radiographs (X-Rays) to see what is wrong.

Horses can get thrush if their hooves are not cleaned. Thrush if not treated properly and soon enough can cause other problems that could be more serious than the initial thrush infection itself.
