Egyptologists say that damaged portions of the original text have been reconstructed incorrectly by Smith. They also point out that the translation by Smith of the original hieroglyphics has nothing whatever to do with the actual text. Smith claimed that the papyri contained the story of Abraham and he wrote an elaborate and detailed 'translation' of the material. The hieroglyphics on the papyri themselves are from standard ancient Egyptian funerary texts and have nothing at all to do with Smith's Book of Abraham.

The deeper question is that if this material from Joseph Smith can so easily be debunked, how can anyone give credence to the Book of Mormon, a supposed 'translation' of hieroglyphs on golden tablets which are now and forever unable to be critically examined?

It appears that Mr. Smith was counting on the possibility that the meaning of the hieroglyphic text would remain forever obscure. He may not have realized that even then scholars were beginning to successfully break the code, based on the now famous work on the Rosetta Stone. Smith would have had no way of knowing that this work was being done, or he would surely have changed his approach.

Where in the bible is the story of Abraham?

The story of Abraham is found in the book of Genesis. Starts about chap 11 verse 26. When first mentioned his name is Abram but it is later changed to Abraham. The story of Abraham is also found in a great many, more recent extra-biblical traditions. Bruce Feiler (Abraham) says that probably less than one per cent of the stories told about Abraham appear in the Bible, with an explosion of detail beginning to appear in Jewish tradition from the third century BCE onwards.

What do Mormons call non Mormons?

Most Mormons are not mean in calling non Mormons names. When referring to non Mormons, they are usually called non members. It's not to offend people, it's just when you're classifying all non Mormons, you have to say something. Former Church President Gordon B. Hinckley suggested called non Mormons "Friends of other faiths" as a kinder-sounding term, but it didn't really catch on. ^^Good answer. When referring to someone who is not a member of the church we call them non members. If they are a member but hardly ever go we just call them inactive. Its not in anyway to offend anyone.

What did the Mormons call themselves in pioneer times?

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) have always called themselves Latter-day Saints. "Mormon" was a nickname given to them by their enemies, mocking them for their belief in the Book of Mormon. Mormons in pioneer times as well as today generally call themselves Latter-day Saints and prefer that others call them by this name as well. This title is sometimes abbreviated to LDS.
