The southern colonies had a feudal culture where much wealth was held in the hands of a few. Slavery was the main form of human resources and cash crops were the main type of farming that took place in this agrarian society. Plantations were so vast, there wasn't a lot of land left for food or subsistence farming, so many whites outside that culture were also poor. The lifestyle was leisurely and opulent with huge antebellum mansions, European education for the planter's children, and behavior that attempted to mimic chivalry.

When it is the name of a course or part of a book title, Social Studies is a proper noun. For most other uses, social studies is a common noun. Example uses: Your school requires that you take a social studies course each year. I get my highest grades in social studies. You must take Social Studies I and Social Studies II, but Social Studies III is optional.
