France is a parlementary republic.

Any French citizen aged 18 elects directly the members of local councils (town, departement and region levels), the representatives in the lower chamber of the parliament (the Assemblée), and the French president. Only the representatives of the upper house of parliament (le Sénat) are elected indirectly by a body of (directly elected) officials.

The government of France is what is considered a Parliamentarian Socialist Democracy.

In a Social Democracy, the government owns enterprises based mostly on human needs: Healthcare, Transportation, Housing, and Education. Social democracy removes such rights as: land title rights, full procurement from one's inheritance, rights of privacy are greatly limited for such things as communication, ownership protection, and use of overall income.

My reason for use of overall income stems from the percentage of income that system takes away in its sets of taxation, which are regressively based.

Unlike the free enterprise or capitalist Republican Democracy of the United States, the powers of the government are kept in check by its division of powers, which goes to promote the interests of the population and not the mainline interests of the representatives elected to office.
