"Literature" means writing, but especially all of those forms of writing where the author has made an effort to make the writing especially beautiful, powerful or thought-provoking. Words which are purely functional, like an instruction manual or a business letter, or those which do not try to rise above the inanities of daily life are not literature, even if they are written down.
