"Realm", which means a kingdom, is here used in a figurative sense. It means all those things which have to do with literature, the community of people interested in literature, that area of knowledge which has to do with literature. "Literature" means writing, but especially all of those forms of writing where the author has made an effort to make the writing especially beautiful, powerful or thought-provoking. Words which are purely functional, like an instruction manual or a business letter, or those which do not try to rise above the inanities of daily life are not literature, even if they are written down.
