1s2 2s2 2p4 Meaning 2 electrons in the 1s orbital/shell, 2 electrons in the 2s orbital & 4 electrons in the 2p. So both 1s & 2s orbitals are full, the 2p orbital is only partly filled as it can hold 6 electrons.

Orbital Notation is a way to show how many electrons are in an orbital for a given element. They can either be shown with arrows or circles. One arrow represents one electron in a shell. Two arrows will be pointing differently; one up and one down to show a maximum of two electrons with different spin. Circles will be crossed out once or twice according to the number of electrons.

Under each set of arrows/circles, the shell number and the orbital will be shown. The first shell is always represented as "1s": the "1" is the shell and the "s" is the orbital.

The orbital notation for C is

1s __ (1 arrow pointing up and 1 down)

2s __ (1 arrow pointing up and 1 down) 3rd is blank)

2p __ __ __ (1 arrow each on the 1st and 2nd lines,3rd is blank)
1s2,2s2,2px1, 2py1

Shorthand orbital notation is written as the orbital with the number of electrons in that orbital in superscript. For example, if 2p has 4 electrons in it is written as 2p^4.
