The World Meteorological Organization defines sunshine as direct irradiance from the Sun measured on the ground of at least 120 W/m2. In simple terms, it is approximately the sunlight strong enough to cause shadows on the ground. It is also approximately equal to Global Solar Radiation of about 100 W/m2. Global Solar Radiation takes into account not only direct solar irradiance but also irradiance factors occurring in the Earth's atmosphere. According to Dictionary.com:
1. the shining of the sun; direct light of the sun. 2. brightness or radiance; cheerfulness or happiness. 3. a source of cheer or happiness. 4. the effect of the sun in lighting and heating a place. 5. a place where the direct rays of the sun fall.
