ATA = Advanced Technology Attachment and has speeds of up to 133 Mbps. Has a 40 pin connector. SATA = Serial ATA. Smaller connections and higher data speeds. See the attached link for a webpage with more info.
The SATA host adapter is integrated into almost all modern computers. The difference is sata is 7 pin connectoe and ata is 40-44 pin

Internal hard drives can be connected through SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, and some connect directly to the PCI-Express bus.
The "best" drive depends entirely on what you need the drive to do.
SATA Hard Drives are currently the best at being inexpensive and holding large amounts of data.
SAS Hard Drives are a bit faster overall, but are typically only found on server mainboards and RAID controller cards.
SATA Solid State Drives are best at loading data quickly while remaining compatible with older technologies.
PCI-Express Solid State Drives are currently the fastest overall at loading data but they are the most expensive and are not fully supported yet.

∙ 14y agoSATA runs a faster data transfer rate, up to 715MB/s. It also allows for reduced cable mass, 7 compared to PATA's 80. So all told, yes, SATA is a better connection.
