Best Answer

IGBT first of all is a hybrid device meaning the combination of two devices; the BJT and the MOSFET.

Depending on the application, one can never say an IGBT is better than others.

Typically, an IGBT is ideal for high powered, high voltage and high frequency applications

In brief:

Difference Between IGBT and Thyristor

1. Three terminals of IGBT are known as emitter, collector and gate, whereas thyristor has terminals known as anode, cathode and gate.

2. Gate of the thyristor only needs a pulse to change into conducting mode, whereas IGBT needs a continuous supply of gate voltage.

3. IGBT is a type of transistor, and thyristor is considered as tightly couple pair of transistors in analysis.

4. IGBT has only one PN junction, and thyristor has three of them.

5. Both devices are used in high power applications.

Why IGBT is a voltage control device?

Yes

Which is used for high speed application bjt igbt mosfet triac?

supposed to be MOSFET. but i also depends on your working freq.

What is the full form of IGBT?

The full form of igbt is insulated gate bipolar transistor. it is constructed from the combining of both BJT and PMOSFET. it has high input impedance and low on - state power loss . it is free from second break down problem present in bjt... it is also known as (MOSIGT), (COMFET)... it is constructed virtualy in the same manner as a power MOSFET.an IGBT has also thousand of basic structure cells connected appropritely on a single chip of silicon. it has a four substrate p,p+,n+,n-. respectively... p+ substrate is called injection layer because it injects holes into n- layer .n- layer is called drift region . thickness of the n- layer determines the voltage blocking capability of IGBT. the p layer is called body of the IGBT. WHERE IT IS USED : it is widely used in medium power application such as DC and AC motors drives. UPS SYSTEMS , RELAYS AND CONTACTORS. In thyristor the gate is triggered the gate is losses its control. ie if we remove the gate pulse after the thyristor starts conducting it will not stop. but in IGBT we can control the Gate. by applying reverse voltage applied across it . The Thyristors can not be switched beyond 1kHz where as IGBTs can be switched upto 25kHz and even to 100KHz with few soft switching techniques. The thyristor can carry very high currents order of 3000A but IGBT carries less current max of 1000A. Thyristor commutation ,that is switching off is very difficult. But there are applications of Thyristor with natural commutation. The IGBT can be switched on and off like a MOSFET. ie it is voltage controlled device.

How do you check IGBT with multimeter?

IGBT JUNCTION TEST PROCEDURE 1. Short out G1 to E1 and G2 to E2. With a multimeter set to check diodes, check across the C1- C2E1 junction. With the (+) probe on C1 and the (-) probe on C2E1, you should see an open circuit. Switch the probes. You should see a diode drop on the meter. 2. Check across the C2E1-E2 junction. With the (+) probe on C2E1 and the (-) probe on E2, you should see an open circuit. Switch the probes. You should see a diode drop on the meter. 3. With a 9 volt* battery, connect the (+) terminal to G1 and the (-) terminal to E1. Using your meter (set to check diodes), should see a diode drop across the C1-C2E1 junction in both directions now. Connect the (+) terminal to G2 and the (-) terminal to E2. You should see a diode drop across the C2E1-E2 junction in both directions here as well. 4. If the IGBT passed all of the above tests, the IGBT is good. * You may be able to use a second multimeter as a voltage source by setting it to check resistance at its lowest available resistance scale. The (+) probe is the positive side. However, not all meters provide enough DC voltage for this, and may even give you false readings. A known DC voltage from 8 to 15 volts is recommended instead.
