Vedas were the religious lore of Aryans, who were immigrants to India. They are different from main-line Hinduism. The chief God in Vedas is Indra. The major Gods in Hinduism are Shiva, Rama, Krishna, etc., and the Mother Goddess, Durga. After the assimilation of Aryans in Hinduism, Vishnu, a lesser God of Vedas assumed a high position incorporating many earlier Hindu Gods as his avataras (Parashuram, Rama, and Krishna). The Aryan Rudra was assimilated in Shiva. Prajapati or Brahmanaspati of the Aryans became Brahma. Indra was relegated to a lesser position. So now the major Gods of hindus are Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva; along with Mother Goddess, Durga.
