Microsoft Works includes spreadsheet, calender, and other creative and useful templates, aside from word processing. Microsoft Word is only for Word processing. The two programs also use different file formats by default, with Microsoft's .doc or .docx being the most popular.

MS Works is a less expensive and less-featured Office Productivity suite. The other well known office productivity option is MS Office.

MS Works has a word processor, a spreadsheet, a database and some more tools bundled together. Being less expensive, this is the hot favourite of many OEMs. Note that, MS Works, at least up to the latest version, had different file formats than MS Office, but recently the word processor also shifted from WPS to DOC format. In short, MS Office is a 100 pound gorilla, while MS Works is a small chimpanzee!

They are essentially very similar - in look and functionality. The main difference is - you, the user - can manipulate the open office software (if you have the know-how ) to adapt it to your own specific needs. Microsoft will NOT allow the end-user to do this, as their program is copyright-protected.
