Best Answer

Na (sodium) is an atom in singularity, whereas NaCl (sodium chloride) is a compound made up of the two atoms Na (sodium) and Cl (chlorine). They are combined due to the attraction between positively charged and negatively charged atoms. Na is positively charged with one more proton than electrons (1+) and Cl is negatively charged with one more electron than protons (1-).

I hope that helped :-)
