What is the difference between Tylenol 2 and Tylenol 3?

Both Tylenol 3's and vicodin contain acetaminophen (APAP), an NSAID pain reliever. The more powerful ingredient in Tylenol 3 is codiene; whereas the powerful painkiller in vicodin is hydrocodone. Overall, hydrocodone is a lot more effective than codeine as a painkiller. Moreover, codeine is a pro-drug; a drug that only becomes effective when your system changes it into morphine. As there is a limit to how much codiene your system can convert in any given amount of time, there is an effective max dosage that you can't exceed even if you take more of the medication. Being a drug, hydrocodone has no such inherent limit.
Vicodin is a preparation of acetyl-para-aminophenol, often abbreviated APAP, (the active ingredient in Tylenol), and hydrocodone, a semi-synthetic opioid analgesic about six (6) times stronger than codeine or about 60% the strength of and equivalent amount of morphine.

Tylenol with codeine is exactly what it sounds like. It is a preparation of Tylenol (APAP) and codeine. Codeine is a weak, naturally occurring opioid of about 10% the strength of an equivalent amount of morphine.
