A Shilling was a coin made of silver, or in later years, copper-nickel, and of silvery appearance, approximately 23.5 mm in diameter. A Penny was a copper or bronze coin approximately 30.8 mm in diameter. There were 12 Pence to a Shilling. These coins are now redundant in all of the Commonwealth countries that were using them.

Apart from the fact that they are both round coins, they have almost nothing in common.

The Shilling was a sub-unit of many redundant/obsolete currencies used by Britain and countries of the British Empire/Commonwealth, and has been out of circulation in most countries for 30 to 40 years. They were made from silver of varying fineness over the years, but were gradually made from much cheaper metals such as nickel during the 20th century, until they were no longer made at all. There were 12 Pennies in a Shilling and 20 Shillings in a Pound.

The Dollar is a current denomination and the major unit of many of the world's currencies. Dollars come in all shapes and sizes, and there has been a trend over the past 30 years to make them as a coin from various metals rather than the more traditional paper notes. There are 100 cents (or someother unit) to the Dollar.
