Adult stem cells are harvested from newborn's cord blood or human bone marrow while embryo stem cells come from the inner cell mass of a human embryo. No fetus is killed to use the stem cells, but the embryo cannot function and must be destroyed without a inner cell mass.

And embryonic stem cell is taken from an embryo at a very early stage of its development. The embryo is so small at that point that taking the stem cells destroys the embryo. An adult stem cell is taken from an adult and doing so does not destroy the adult. Adult stem cells are thought to be less flexible than embryonic stem cells and therefore less suitable for certain processes.

The adults have more freedom and can make decisions for themselves. They usually try to have a job or other productive role in society. The embryonic cells are the opposite, being very dependent on the mother for everything.

adult stem cells are more rare, where embryonic stem cells are a lot easier to be found. but embryonic stem cells are more likley to be rejected if they are used for transplants.

What is the difference between adult stem cells and an embryo stem cells?

An embryonic stem cell is young, undifferentiated, pluripotent, and unspecialized, so it can turn into any body cell. This makes it the most versatile option. Adult stems can change identity, but are not as versatile for research.

What are the similarities and differences between research on and the use of adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells?

One major difference between adult and embryonic stem cells is their different abilities in the number and type of differentiated cell types they can become. Embryonic stem cell can become all cell types of the body because they are pluripotent. Adult stem cells are thought to be limited to differentiating into different cell types of their tissue of origin.

Are Adult stem cells as useful as Embrionic stem cells?

Yes and No. The only big difference is the procedures used in harvesting adult stem cells is considered legal and safe. There's no need to kill a human embryo. Adult stem cells can be harvested from cord blood or human bone marrow. But embryonic stem cells are able to make more kinds of cells than adult stem cells.

What is the difference between embryonic and adult stem cells?

An embryonic stem cell potentially can develop into ANY cell in the body theoretically without limit to replenish, and an adult stem cell is only able to mature into a specialised tissue cell from which tissue the cell is positioned.

What happens to an embryo when stem cells are harvested from it?

the embryo is killed
