A nutritionist is a broad term that describes one who could have a degree in nutrition -- a 4-yr degree or a doctorate degree; and/or experience in nutrition; or someone who picked up a book, read it and declared him/herself to be a nutritionist, and anyone in between these two descriptions.

A registered dietitian is one who has met specific requirements that represent this title. S/he has at least a four-year degree in nutrition, dietetics, or a closely related field, has completed an internship and has passed an examination.

Should you trust a nutritionist?

There are two types of nutritionists. Alternative therapists and scientists. Usually nutritionists are described as the dietitian but not a doctor. This doesn't give a reason why you shouldn't trust them. Make sure you choose a specialist who is licensed, certified and member of nutritionist or nutritional therapy society. You can't get these official documents without appropriate education.

Information on being a nutionist dietrionist?

To become a dietitian, one must be enrolled in a university that is accredited by the American Dietetic Association (ADA), complete the curriculum for the university and the ADA, upon graduation they can obtain a master's degree in the health field and then they must sit for the exam. Once they pass the exam then they will be a registered dietitian. Most states require a nutritionist or dietitian to be licensed to practice in their state by joining the local dietitian association. This usually take 5-6 years to complete. A nutritionist can obtain their knowledge by reading up on their own to gain information or they can take a short course in nutrition. These are not usually accredited and tend to be biased or used to sell products to the consumer. however, there is a course to become a certified clinical nutritionist(CCN) which requires 2 years of schooling and 1 year of clinical work, which is a very intense course work.
