A psychologist is usually a PhD or PsyD and cannot prescribe prescription drugs. A psychiatrist in a medical physician with a specialty in psychiatry. Therefore they are authorized to treat patients both psychologically as well as medically through the use of psychoactive drug treatments.
However, while a psychiatrist receives many years of the same training that any medical doctor undergoes, a clinical psychologist gets years of specialized training in the assessment, diagnosis, and psychological treatments that help those suffering cognitive, emotional and behavioral disorders.
After classroom training, both groups are required to amass hours of experience supervised by specialists in their respective fields.
