A veterinarian can operate on your pet, and perscribe medication. A technician can not do either one of those actions If you were comparing this to human medicine, a veterinarian is the doctor, and a registered veterinary technician (RVT) would be the registered nurse (RN).

In simple terms, the Veterinarian is the doctor and the Veterinary Technician is the nurse. The Veterinarian makes diagnoses and prescribes treatments, the Veterinary Technician carries out the treatment orders, or assists the Veterinarian in ensuring treatments are completed.

A veterinarian is a medical doctor for animals who is trained to examine, recognize, diagnose and treat injuries and illnesses of animals. A veterinary technician is similar to a human nurse - qualified to monitor animals and administer medications but yet does not have the depth of medical training that a veterinarian has.

A veterinary technician is the term used for people who have an associates degree in veterinary technology (and typically restricted only to those who have met the credentialing requirements in their state). A veterinary technologist is someone who has a bachelors degree in veterinary technology, though many states do not legally recognize the title "veterinary technologist" and still term these people "veterinary technicians".

Can a vet tech open up an animal hospital?

It will depend on the state that the veterinary facility is in and the exact nature of the relationship between the veterinary technician and the veterinary practice. Some states do not allow anyone but a veterinarian to open a veterinary practice. It may be possible, however, for a veterinary technician to own the facilities and employ the veterinary staff which they contract out to a veterinarian. In these situations, the veterinarian owns the practice (client records, makes all medical decisions, etc) and rents property and staff from the facility owner.

What is the difference between a vet technician and a vet technologist?

The difference is in the amount of education. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, a veterinary technician is someone who has a 2-year degree in veterinary technology from an AVMA accredited college program. A veterinary technologist has a 4-year degree in veterinary technology. However, because most state laws don't differentiate between the two degrees, you may very well see people with a 4-year degree who are "licensed veterinary technicians", "registered veterinary technicians" or "certified veterinary technicians". It is also possible to see people in certain states called "veterinary technicians" who have no formal education at all due to a lack of legal requirements for education or credentialing to work as a veterinary technician in a handful of states.

How To Decide Between Vet Tech Schools For The Best Education?

A veterinary technician is a person that has been specially trained to assist a veterinarian in an animal health facility. Veterinary technicians are responsible for many of the same tasks as the veterinarian, including administering vaccines, drawing blood, administering anesthesia, assisting with wounds, among other tasks. For those that love working with animals, yet do not wish to go through veterinary school, a veterinary technician may be a great career. However, in order to obtain the training needed to become a successful veterinary technician, one must first choose the best school in which to receive their education. How To Choose A Great School In Which To Receive Veterinary Technician Training When selecting a veterinary technician school, it is important that all possible schools have been accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association, or the AVMA. To become a veterinary technician, a student must have graduated from a school accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and pass a state regulated exam. If a student has completed a training program from a school that has not been accredited by the AVMA, he or she may not take the state exam, and therefore, will not be eligible to work as a license veterinary technician. When choosing a school in which to receive veterinary technician training, it is also important to consider the faculty employed by the school. A good veterinary technician school will employ experienced veterinarians. These schools will offer their students the best education, supplied by veterinarians that are experienced in the animal care field. It is also important that students are offered a hands-on education. Students that receive hands-on training will be more experienced and better equipped to succeed as a veterinary technician. The last factor to consider when selecting a school is the price of the program. While financial aid may be available, it is important that potential students will be able to afford their training. There are many great programs that are relatively inexpensive, and may be the most beneficial to those with a limited budget. When these factors are carefully considered, potential students will be able to choose a great program that will help them secure a successful future as a veterinary technician.

What is the difference between a veterinary technician and a laboratory animal technician?

A veterinary technician in most states is someone who has graduated from an AVMA accredited veterinary technology college degree program and then taken both the Veterinary Technician National Exam and a state exam to achieve credentials. Licensure, registration or certification are all types of credentials that may be granted depending on the state that the veterinary technician lives/works in. However, there are still some states where there is no requirement for a formal education in veterinary technology in order to work as a veterinary technician. A Laboratory Animal Technician is a person who has been certified by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science. Certification represents a requisite number of years experience specifically in laboratory animal science with the requirement varying based upon education. There are no specific educational requirements to become an LAT except that you are required to have fewer years of hands on experience if you have some sort of college degree. Many LAT's earn a degree in Veterinary Technology prior to going to work in a laboratory and earning their LAT because the course material for a veterinary technician is applicable in many ways--anatomy and physiology, biological sample collection, etc. Veterinary Technology programs generally offer a laboratory animal course that specifically covers the special care and handling of laboratory animlas.

Is a veterinary technician a girls job?

No. It is a person's job. Some male vet techs are excellent, some female techs are horrible. What dangles between your legs makes no difference in how well you do a job: it's whats between your ears and how you use that that matters.

What is the difference between a veterinary assistant and a veterinary technician?

AnswerThe difference between a veterinary techician and a veterinary assistant is the amount of education and credentialling required. Veterinary assistants are not required to have any education related to the field of veterinary medicine or veterinary technology. There are voluntary educational opportunities; however these are not equivalent to a college degree programs and are instead basic vocational training. There is no over-sight by a professional body to ensure that the majority of these programs provide adequate or correct information. There is no requirement for hands-on training and instructors often have little or no experience or education in the veterinary field. There are a handful of certification programs that are designed and approved by veterinary professional organizations or that are offered by colleges which also offer accredited veteirnary technology programs and these are better choices for someone who wants to be a veterinary assistant. This is an entry level position for working in the veterinary field and is not a recognized profession in any state. In contrast, veterinary technicians or technologists (the terminology varies somewhat depending upon clinic and degree) have generally completed a college program and received either an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in vet tech. In many states, vet techs also have to maintain state licensure, including ongoing continuing education.
