In desktop publishing, a widow is a single word, portion of a word, or short line of text that appears at the end of a paragraph, creating awkward spacing. An orphan, on the other hand, is a single word, short line, or part of a line that appears at the beginning of a column or page, separated from the rest of the paragraph. Both widows and orphans are considered poor design choices and should be avoided for better readability.
