The shifting in the AXOD is done with fluid accumulators. Fluid fills the accumulator and pushes on a piston until it bottoms out. During that time, the clutches are applying slowly. In and AXODE or the AX4N, they eliminate the accumulators and use electric solenoids that regulate pressure to the clutch pistons. These transmissions are NOT interchangeable.

How many quarts of transmission fluid do you need to put in a Generation 3 Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable?

(This answer Covers the "Generation 3" 1996-1999 Series Ford Motor Company Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable.)This answer differentiates depending on the transmission and the engine equipped. Normally the 1998+ year model Taurus/Sables had the AX4N Transaxle, whereas the 1996-1997 models had the AX4S. However due to transmission replacements and "one-off's" at the factory, many 1996+ Model tauri were shipped with the AX4N transaxle and some 1998+ models had the AX4S.To determine which transmission you have its as easy as climbing under the car and counting the bolts on the transmission pan. You can tell because this will be the largest pan on the vehicle. The AXOD-E (AX4S) has 17 Bolts. the AX4N has 19 Bolts.Another way to tell is some pans may have AXOD METRIC or AX4N METRIC stamped on it. If it says AXOD METRIC you have the AX4S. (the AX4S used many parts from the AXOD transmission and they are brothers in design however the AX4S is electronic controlled and features some improvements over the AXOD.) If your Pan says AX4N you obviously Have the AX4N.ApplicationVolumeAX4S (Vulcan)12.20 QTS. ( 11.5L )AX4N (Vulcan)13.50 QTS. ( 12.8L )AX4N (Duratec)13.40 QTS. ( 12.7L )AX4N (SHO)13.40 QTS. ( 12.7L )Remember to check the fluid regularly, as well as when you are filling the transmission.DO NOT OVERFILL.ONLY USE FORD MERCON V FLUID IN THESE TRANSMISSIONS. USE OF OTHER FLUIDS WILL DAMAGE THE TRANSMISSIONS.MERCON fluid has been superseded by the MERCON V fluid specification. For more information, see the included links.

How many bolts are in the trans pan on a 95 Ford Taurus?

If you have the AX4N it will have 19 bolts, if you have AX4S (also known as AXOD) it will have 17. - In most cases both pans are stamped with the AX4S or AX4N.

Where is the transmission pan on a Generation 3 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable?

The following information applies to the 1996-1999 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable. The transmission pan is the flat bottomed pan located under the vehicle. It may have imprinted wording on it that may or may not say "AXOD METRIC" or "AX4N METRIC" It does not have a drain plug and requires careful removal to drain all 8-10 quarts of fluid. AX4S/AXOD-E transmissions have 17 bolts, and AX4N transmissions have 19 bolts.

Can you use an axod metric in place of ax4d?

If by "ax4d" you mean "ax4s" then, yes you can, but make sure you use the appropriate pan gasket four it. If you mean "ax4n" then, no you cant, the look similar, but are different

What is the transmission fluid capacity for a 93 Ford Taurus?

Will transmission from 1995 Taurus fit 1999 Taurus?

yes it will fit...thay are all the axod trannys and any Taurus transmission will fit in any Taurus there is.

What makes rebuilding or replacing the Transmission on a 1996 Ford Taurus more difficult than rebuilding or replacing transmissions on other cars?

AnswerThe transmission in all Tauruses (the original AXOD transmission, and the later AX4S and AX4N) is a front wheel drive transaxle. For starters, in order to remove that transmission from the vehicle, the engine MUST be supported by a brace and the FRAME must be removed. Secondly. the transmission and the differental on that transaxle are housed in the same case. which makes it that much more complex to work on. Third, the pump and that valve body are ONE assembly.Does this answer your question??Macs Transmissions (Houston, TX) 281-394-4951 Macstransmissions@gmail.com

What is the transmission fluid capacity of a Ford Taurus - Mercury Sable?

The rest is still up inside the torque converter.Measure what you drained and start with refilling that amount to put back in to return levels back to normal. If you're adding fluid, simply use the dipstick - according to the illustrated instructions in the Owners Manual - and add what is necessary.NOTE: This is one of the points of distinction to having the transmission "flushed" - where a professional shop is going to hookup specialized equipment to achieve a full fluid exchange, or you do the flush yourself ( See "Related Questions" below).Note #2: Many experts (like the guys on "The Car Show" radio program) assert that exchanging 50-60% of the fluids like would happen when doing a fluid/filter change is GOOD. The oil itself is not deteriorating so much as, what they call the "additive package" dissipates. So the percentage from doing the fluid/filter revives the "additive package" sufficient to support the long life of the transmission.See "Related Questions" below for much much more - including links to your very own electronic copy of 1996 or newer Taurus/Sable Owners Manuals. What's My Transmission Type? This answer differentiates depending on the transmission and the engine equipped. If your Pan says AX4N you obviously Have the AX4N.AnswerThat depends on what kind of transmission service we are doing. If we are dropping the pan and replacing the filter, you only get a little more than 1/3 of the fluid out, so we only need about 5 quarts. If we are flushing the transmission, which exchanges all the fluid in the transmission and torque converter, we need about 14 quarts. BTW, use Mercon V fluid.read the dipstick while engine is running...and a manual will help with diagnosis and repair, and a shop manual should be available at the local library in the reference section for FREE, make copies of the right pages, good luck...:)

Where is the transmission speed sensor located on a 1998 Ford Taurus?

Answer - 1998The speed sensor should be located on the drivers side of the transmission behind the wheel but you may have to remove the plastic cover in order to see it. The location described is only for the AXOD overdrive transmission.See "Related Questions" below for more

Theres no first or reverse in ford windstar axod metric transmission even after filter and fluid change?

Customer had a similar problem with a 99 Windstar. Stopped pulling while driving it. Had it towed to me and I replaced the torque convertor. Problem fixed.

Does a Ford Taurus transmission fit a Ford Windstar?

It depends on what Taurus you have, the 1990-1995 Ford Taurus' use the AXOD and the AXOD-E transmissions. The 1996-2003 Ford Taurus' use the AX4S and some models even use the AX4SN transmissions. I have looked at some info on the Ford Windstar and they sould work, some Windstars use the same transmissions as the Ford Taurus, I think they use the same transmissions as the Taurus from 1993-2000.

Will a 91 Taurus transmission fit in a 93 Taurus both 3.8 engines?

Swapping transmissions in a Taurus can be difficult because of all the changes ford made on these cars. For example 1991 and 1992 Taurus 3.0 liter transmissions are both axod-e but are not interchangeable because of electronic bulkhead connectors.Best to check with a transmission shop, most are happy to provide this information.
