There are several differences.

Electronic keyboards can create a variety of sounds and effects, while the piano makes many possible variations to the same set of sounds, as generated by the keys and pedals.

Pianos (acoustic) make sounds using strings (the keys trigger the strings). Because of this, pianos are 'touch sensitive' - you can change the sound depending on how you press the keys. Also, pianos have a LOT MORE keys than on keyboards - most piano pieces cannot by played on keyboards as there are not enough keys.

Keyboard music tends to be a lot simpler and easier than piano music. It often has simple chords in the bass and a melody in the treble rather than more complex harmonies on the piano.

Because keyboards are electronic they also have different 'sounds' - they can play the sound of many other instruments, not just piano.

As a general rule, if you can play the piano you can play the keyboard, but if you can play the keyboard it doesn't mean you can also play the piano!

If one is defining a 'keyboard' as a stringed piano, the following could be correct: 1. The actual feel of the keys moving a mechanical link to produce the sound is going to be different than an electrical connection. 2. The actual sound vibrating off the strings and being amplified through the soundboard is better than an amplified sound through speakers. Keyboard can also be an organ: 1. A pipe organ where the sound is created by moving a volume of air through various sized metal tubes. 1. An electronic organ where the sound is created by a tone generator or by digital means and amplified through speakers. Keyboard can also mean Electronic keyboard: 1. An instrument capable of producing many sounds through synthesis (the shaping of various sound waves through a variety of filters) These can produce many familiar sounds (violin, trumpets, Bass Guitar) and lots of other 'special' sounds like Wah-wah, cows mooing, and other hair raising and sometimes wierd or frightening sounds. Keyboard can also be what we use to give commands to a computer. It can also be the keys of a calculator, and the list goes on ad-infinitum. A Digital Piano is an electronic instrument whose sound is created digitally and amplified through speakers. The player has a single keyboard much like a piano (but fewer than 88 keys as the normal acoustic piano has). The player usually has sounds available like organ, honky-tonk piano, concert piano, organ or some solo instrumental voices like Trumpet, string instruments, human voice imitations, etc.

Modest. A high-end digital piano can be really close to an acoustic piano in terms of sounds and keyboard feeling. And a 88 keyboard is the standard setting nowadays. -- citseeker

I am not familiar with the term "Elpiano" unless that is a foreign way to say "The Piano". Maybe someone else can add to this thread about that term. Without knowing what the originator of this question meant my merely indicating "keyboard" I have attempted to 'generalize' my response. Hope this helps ... always look forward to others adding their comments, too.

1) A digital piano, if a full piano, will have 88 keys. An electronic music keyboard will usually have 61 keys.

2) The "piano" voice in a good quality electronic keyboard is the same basic electronic voice as is in the company's high-ticket digital piano. But in the high-tech digital piano, you are getting that company's "colege graduate with honors" version of that voice; in the electronic keyboard, you are getting the "fourth grader" version of it.
