An active volcano is one which maintains a hot magma chamber, so that it might erupt anytime in the future. An inactive (extinct or dormant) contains mainly cooled lava and is not likely to erupt unless there is a new supply of hot magma.

An active volcano is a volcano that has had at least one eruption in the past 10,000 years.

A volcano is considered inactive or extinct if it has not erupted within historic times (for at least 10,000 years) and its form has changed as a result of weathering and erosion.
