Internists diagnose what's wrong, and deal with problems that are amenable to treatment with medication - diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, pneumonia, influenza - the list goes on and on.

Surgeons diagnose and treat problems that are amenable to surgical repair - hernias, inflamed appendix, colon cancer, knife wounds, aortic aneurysms - that list goes on and on as well.

Internists refer their patients to surgeons when they have a problem that needs surgery to correct it. There is no drug an internist can prescribe to fix a hernia. Likewise, if a surgeon has a patient with diabetes, he/she may consult an internist to help manage it.

Each has different tools to work with, and concentrates on problems that they are trained to fix (or at least help manage).
