In machines built to display time you have analog, which is an original-type mechanically designed clock that uses a one second click to move the long minute hand and shorter hour hand. A digital timepiece relies on battery or electric current. The difference in the two is that one is basic mechanics, and the other uses a wiring board with a transformer and such that directs through electronic signal the precision of seconds, minutes and hours as well as display through LED light signals. The former is more accurate, but is obviously useless should you find yourself somewhere without batteries or a wall outlet.

Analogue systems use non-quantized variables to store real-world data. To store that same data digitally it must be encoded with a numeric representation, typically a binary representation.

An analog control system is one that presents data by measuring a continuous variable. This reports the data back in voltage or pressure.

What is the difference between a modem and a codec?

* Codec is for coding analog data into digital form and decoding it back. The digital data coded by Codec are samples of analog waves. * Modem is for modulating digital data into analog form and demodulating it back. The analog symbols carry digital data.

What is the difference between digital and analogs?

In chemistry, analog is a compound with a molecular structure closely similar to another. Analog is also relating to or using signals or info represented by a continuously variable physical quantity such as spatial position or voltage. Analog is often contrasted (opposite) of DIGITAL --like a clock showing the time represented by "hands" instead of being Displayed DIGITS.
