∙ 13y agoIt all depends on the purpose of use. A photodiode has relatively small area and can generate only little power sufficient enough to drive a small voltage transistor or a LED. On the other hand, solar cells can be made quite big enough to generate watts of energy per square inch of area. Employed on large scale, it could become the new source of power in the tropical countries.

photodiode a pn junction(usually with wider depletion width) usee d in RB mode only to detect light.
Light incident on depletion width breaks the covalent bond and charge flow results in current that is proportional to the intensity(amount of photons incident) of light.
